Spotlight on: Cal & Bogey

dogwalker-prone-bogey.jpg No, he’s not dead. He’s Bogey and he is the half of the Cal & Bogey duo!

Yin and Yang. Whenever I look at Cal & Bogey I am reminded of Yin & Yang. If ever there was an embodiment of this concept it would be these two golden haired pooches. I love these two little guys because they exude so much personality.

When I first started visiting Cal & Bogey they didn’t know what to make of me. It was just a brief meeting where I got to walk them and they tested me as best they could. Both of them use harnesses and short 3 foot leashes so there wasn’t much slack to give them as they tried to haul me off down the street like we were in the Iditarod. It wasn’t until sometime in the Summer that Woofie’s was asked to watch these two boys for about a week that we got to bond and that I got to absolutely adore them.

Cal & Bogey’s owners said that their house was pet friendly so playing ball indoors was perfectly fine. When the weather was way too hot or when it rained I would let them out for only a brief amount of time and then we would come inside and chuck the ball around. This is where I came up with one of my many nicknames for Bogey: RocketDog. His short legs would carry him around the family room with lightning speed and he would launch himself into the air and into my lap. Another adorable fact: both dogs really like to eat some nice, cold canteloupe as a treat!

Cal
dogwalker-forward-cal.jpgCal is such a gentle and loving dog. Each time that I drive up his driveway I always spy him looking out the window for me. As soon as I enter he ambles up to me and greets me by standing up and putting his paws on my shoulders, looking at me like “It is so good to see you! It has been such a long time since we’ve seen each other!”. I know he shouldn’t be doing that but it is such an endearing act. I feel so wanted and appreciated when he does it! He has such a calm, quiet demeanor that you just can’t help but want to reach down and hug him. While you put on his harness he merely stands quietly, giving you his paw when you ask him to put it through the loops. It is always surprising when, near the end of our walks, he gets really excited and starts running around all playful. It is almost like having a large, blonde cat on the end of a leash.

Cal is also one of those dogs who must have the perfect environment and situation to poop. He will look for the ideal spot and get ready to go, stop and get up to look at it again, get ready to go again, stop and circle around it and stare/sniff it, and then finally prepare to do his business like he’s about to get comfortable to read a good book. During the entire ritual I stand there holding his leash and looking down at Bogey who manages to stick his snout up the leg of my shorts searching for a doggie treat.

Bogey
dogwalker-forward-bogey.jpgThe Yang to Cal’s Yin is Bogey, my short little friend that I lovingly call several different names – Bogart for when he’s in trouble, RocketDog for when he’s in the mood to run around like a furry frisbee with legs, Napolean becuase sometimes he behaves like a big dog even though he is so small in stature. Of the two dogs he is the more energetic and mischievous. He has this way of looking at you with his cute, little eyes, big grin and his floppy ears that makes you think that he’s just begging you to find adventure with him. And he’s such a cuddle bug! As soon as I try to put his harness on for his walk he immediately falls over looking for belly rubs and back scratches. Every time I see him walking I imagine a sound effect similar to bells going ‘dingle-dingle-dingle’ with each step.

And my little big man loves to bark at the two Golden Retrievers that are in a fenced in yard along our walking path. He also likes to run between Cal’s legs and nuzzle me when he wants something. He’s my little clown who tries his darndest to make me laugh. Saying good-bye to these two is definitely difficult to do. After our walks I give them both a lot of hugs and kisses and make sure that I rub their backs, butts and tummies. My time with them is always much too short!

And there you have it – the Felix Ungar and Oscar Madison of dogs. Cal & Bogey are two of the sweetest and personable dogs you’ll ever meet. Want to see more of Cal & Bogey? Check out their photo album at the Woofie’s Gallery at http://gallery.woofies.com/v/cal-bogey/.

What a wonderful expose on our boys! I actually taught Cal to greet me that way because we dance together. I know most people think it’s obnoxious, but he’s so gentle and loving when he jumps up. It’s very funny when Bogey comes out from between Cal’s legs and jumps up for his hug too.

It is great to have Woofies in our lives because they obviously care for our boys very well. When we were on vacation Michael even replenished their cantaloupe! We haven’t told Woofies this, but another of their favorite treats is green beans. I buy the huge Costco bag in the frozen section, rinse them in hot water to defrost them, and they gobble them down. They also eat duck and trout. I’ve been told by some that when they die, they want to come back as my dogs!

I think Cal and Bogey are my parents’ new children. And, in case you were curious, they let them get away with a heck of a lot more than I could have! So you have nothing to worry about when it comes to encouraging their unique — and loveable — behaviors. :) I know the boys have a great set of parents — no dog or kid could ask for better — but it also sounds from the blog like they’ve also got some great friends at Woofies.

I don’t think I know RavenousLiz. There are 7 Karen Smith’s at my hairdressers alone, and anyone who knows me would know about Cal and Bogey. We bought Cal, a golden, but we rescued Bogey from Lost Dogs and Cats Rescue. We think he is a sheltie/basset mix, but Dr. Velling saw some golden in him when we first took him to the vet. He has a sheltie face and basset legs, and he blows his coat occasionally. He also can do the hound woo, woo, woo. The rescue group thought he was a mixed Corgi, but we don’t see any Corgi traits except short legs. Someone came up to us at the Reston Pet Fiesta thing last spring and was so excited to see a dog who reminded her exactly of one she used to have, and it was a sheltie, basset mix, so we think we guessed right.

So those dogs are yours, Karen? They are absolutely adorable! I see that Cal is a golden but what is Bogey? That first picture of him is absolutely hilarious! He looks like such a practical joker!

I think this is such a cute and interesting blog for pet lovers! I would like to know what kind of dog the little Napoleon dog is as well. He looks like a load of laughs. Cal looks like one of the most easy going dogs, too.

I don’t think you would have met me – I haven’t been in the states for almost 10 years. I live in Sydney, Australia, and I’m one of Michael’s friends who normally reads his designkitty.com blog. I enjoy reading about him and his endeavors :)

I own an Australian shepperd named Frankie that I completely adore. I enjoy reading how TheDogWalker loves all the dogs and cats! Some of the stories are absolutely hysterical!

That’s something you don’t hear every day! I would have love to have seen that!

Honestly, those boys are so endearing and comical. Hard to believe that Bogey was a rescue dog. I can’t imagine anyone who would have willingly given up that little scoundrel. And he is the perfect compliment to the quiet and gentle Cal.

  • [...] may remember him from our Spotlight On Cal & Bogey article last year. He was a sweet little guy. and he is sorely missed. The news hit all of us like a [...]
